5 Steps to Basic Eye Care

When we think of health we rarely think of eye care. But will all health is important the eyes are used daily and are equally important to your daily regimen. There are several ways you can ensure that your eyes are healthy. In addition to having healthy eyes you must also maintain them. Our bodies age as we age but many don't think of the aging of the eyes until something is wrong. Prevention of eye problems is just as important if not more than condition treatments.

Below you will find 5 tips to help you maintain healthy eyes:

Washing Your Eyes: as simple as it seems, you would be amazed at how few times it happens. Remembering your mother as she says "rinse it out" when you have something in it is just the beginning. Refreshing your eyes with cold running water cleans out particles that may linger around them after being in the wind.  Also, using a generous drop of a good quality artificial tear before bedtime is like washing your face or taking a shower.

Eating a healthy diet: Eating a diet enriched in vitamins will help strengthen you eyes, as well as your body. Maintaining a balanced diet is important for not only losing weight but taking care of all parts of your body. Some foods enriched in vitamins are:

Eggs
Milk
Papaya
Fish
Cilantro

Self Checking your eyes: We all have heard about doing regular breast exams to ensure health but it is important to self check other areas of your body as well. Many of us have busy lives which include reading, PDA's, Computer screens, and Television sets regularly. Ensuring the very tools we use to view them are healthy weekly is not too much to ask. If you see something wrong or questionable contact your eye care professional immediately.

Getting Regular Exams: Getting regular eye check ups will help you catch problems before they get started. Generally every two years is recommended. But if you have Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, or other conditions you should seek an eye exam yearly. Making sure you contact your eye care professional when you detect a problem with your vision or your eyes it extremely important.

Washing your face before you go to bed: Though this tips sounds like common sense it is an important step to good eye health. If you where make-up regularly it is especially important. Eye make-up like mascara, or eye shadow being left on at night can be damaging to your eyes and the skin around your eyes. Remembering to take 5 minutes out of your day and washing off your make up is a small price to pay for a lifetime of good eye health.
